Why Hypnosis
After years in medicine, I wanted a way to connect more deeply with patients and support them beyond prescriptions. Life coaching opened that door – I loved helping people see how their thoughts shaped their lives. Over time, I realized that many of their struggles came from deeper, unconscious repetitive thoughts that coaching often couldn’t reach.
That’s when I discovered hypnosis. I met a former physician who became a hypnotist, and something clicked inside me. I started training and quickly saw the difference. Coaching worked on the conscious mind—but hypnosis allowed me to work directly with the unconscious mind and the unconscious thought patterns that hold us back. I saw it in my own life: after years of struggling to get my coaching business off the ground, hypnosis helped me move past the invisible resistance and blocks. I could finally take action, share what I was doing, and say “Yes!”, to opportunities.
I use hypnosis alongside my medical and coaching skills to empower clients to shatter those old thought patterns and behaviors that kept them stuck. Whether it’s anxiety, chronic pain, cigarette smoking, stress, feeling stuck, or just wanting something different in your life, hypnosis helps you get unstuck at the root. And watching my clients move forward with more ease and confidence is the most rewarding part of my work.

Welcome! I'm Glad You're Here.
As you read this, you might already sense that something inside you is ready for change. At Black Swan Hypnosis, I help unlock the deep strength, resilience, and confidence that’s always been within you—perhaps waiting for the right moment to emerge.
Real transformation begins when you accept yourself, quiet that inner critic, and realize that self-care sometimes means saying, “no”. And as you begin to notice this truth sinking in, you can also imagine how much easier life can feel.
Hypnosis is a natural, powerful way to create real, lasting change. Whatever has been holding you back, you can start to let go… because when you shift your mind, everything else follows.

A Little About Me
I’m Adrienne Charles, MD, a Certified Hypnotist and retired Board-Certified Family Medicine doctor. Over years of working with patients, I noticed something fascinating: many struggles—both physical and emotional—began not in the body, but in the mind. Old thoughts. Old patterns. Ideas planted long ago, perhaps before you even realized they were shaping your life.
Now, imagine what happens when you shift those thoughts—when the mind, instead of working against you, begins working for you. Hypnosis is a scientifically backed method that does just that. Recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) since the 1950s, it allows change to happen naturally, easily, sometimes even effortlessly.
And as you think about that now, you might begin to wonder… what could change for you today?
Oh, and if you were curious—no, I won’t make you cluck like a chicken! Hypnosis isn’t about losing control. It’s about gaining more control over your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors—in a way that finally serves you.

Research
Hypnosis and The American Medical Association
Since 1958, hypnosis has been recognized by the American Medical Association as a legitimate form of medical treatment when administered by an appropriately trained practitioner.
Research Studies
1 – Hypnotherapy is more effective than nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for smoking cessation
In this randomized controlled trial, 164 hospitalized smokers were assigned to one of three groups:
- Hypnotherapy alone
- Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) alone
- Combination of Hypnotherapy and NRT
The study found that at 26 weeks post-hospitalization, the abstinence rates were:
- Hypnotherapy alone: 36.6%
- NRT alone: 18.0%
2 – Hypnosis and Chronic Low Back Pain
Tan, G., Rintala, D. H., Jensen, M. P., Fukui, T., Smith, D., & Williams, W. (2015). A randomized controlled trial of hypnosis compared with biofeedback for adults with chronic low back pain. European Journal of Pain, 19(2), 271–280.
Study Overview:
- This RCT compared the efficacy of hypnosis and biofeedback in adults with chronic low back pain.
Key Findings:
- Participants in both groups reported significant reductions in pain intensity, pain interference, and improvements in sleep quality.
- The hypnosis group demonstrated significantly greater reductions in pain intensity compared to the biofeedback group.
- Over half of the participants who received hypnosis reported clinically meaningful (≥30%) reductions in pain intensity, maintained for at least six months post-treatment.

3 – Hypnosis and Anxiety
Hypnosis for Anxiety: A Narrative Review
Citation: Leo, D. G., Keller, S. S., & Proietti, R. (2024). “Close your eyes and relax”: The role of hypnosis in reducing anxiety, and its implications for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Frontiers in Psychology, 15, 1411835. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11258040/
Findings:
- This narrative review discusses the effectiveness of hypnosis in treating anxiety disorders and general anxiety, either alone or in combination with other psychological interventions.
- The authors note that hypnosis has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing anxiety and stress, suggesting its potential role in preventing cardiovascular diseases linked to chronic stress.
Conclusion:
While these studies indicate that hypnosis alone can be effective in reducing anxiety symptoms, particularly in the short term, the evidence is more robust when hypnosis is combined with other therapeutic modalities. Further high-quality RCTs focusing specifically on hypnosis as a standalone treatment for GAD are needed to draw more definitive conclusions.
4 – Hypnosis and healing bone fractures

5 – Hypnosis and Burns
Tulane University’s Dr. Dabney Ewin, a pioneering psychiatrist, surgeon, and hypnotist, extensively utilized hypnosis in the treatment of burn injuries. His work focused on employing hypnotic techniques to manage pain, reduce anxiety, and potentially minimize the depth and severity of burns.
Dr. Ewin advocated for the immediate use of hypnosis following burn injuries. He emphasized that early hypnotic intervention could prevent the progression of burns from superficial to more severe degrees.
One of his key techniques involved guiding patients to visualize their burns as “cool and comfortable,” aiming to mitigate the inflammatory response and reduce tissue damage.
In his 1986 publication, “Emergency Room Hypnosis for the Burned Patient,” Dr. Ewin detailed methods for applying hypnosis in acute burn care settings. He reported that patients who received hypnotic suggestions shortly after injury experienced less pain and anxiety during treatment.
Additionally, he observed that these patients often required fewer analgesics and exhibited improved healing outcomes. Dr. Ewin also highlighted the psychological benefits of hypnosis in burn care. By reducing anxiety and stress, hypnosis not only alleviated immediate discomfort but also contributed to better long-term mental health outcomes for burn patients.
6 – Hypnosis in Emergency Medicine
Dr. Steve Bierman, a board-certified emergency and family physician, has extensively explored the use of hypnosis in medical settings, including the management of burn injuries. His work emphasizes the power of language and suggestion in influencing patient outcomes.
In his 1989 publication, “Hypnosis in the Emergency Department,” Dr. Bierman presents five cases where he utilized hypnosis either as the primary treatment or as an adjunct to standard medical care. These cases demonstrate the application of hypnotic techniques to manage pain, reduce anxiety, and facilitate healing in acute medical situations.
